





| The Adaptive Sports Programme |

The WindReach Adaptive Sports Programme began with the WindReach Slammers Basketball team and the programme has grown remarkably in the last two years. The Programme now has a full time adaptive sports Coordinator and WindReach is Working in partnership with the Bermudian Paralympics association to create awareness and increase participation in adaptive sports in Bermuda. Training sessions take place every Saturday afternoon and special events are organized throughout the year.
2008 Adaptive Sports ExpoThe 2008 Adaptive Sports Expo was held from Friday April 25th to Sunday April 27th, 2008 and the Annual Walk and Roll Event was held on Saturday April 26th as a part of the Expo. The objective of the Adaptive Sports Expo was to introduce and promote adaptive sports to people of all ages and abilities in Bermuda. International Paralympic athletes and coaches from overseas came to the island to share their expertise with local adaptive sports athletes and trainers. Over seventy five special needs individuals participated in the event and enjoyed a variety of sports including track and field, archery, wheelchair basketball, swimming, bocia, curling, sailing and wheelchair tennis.
WindReach Multi-adaptive Sports CampWindReach held a multi-adaptive sports camp from Monday, July 21st until Friday, July 25th, 2008. The Sports Camp was a tremendous success and nine local adaptive sports athletes went through a week of rigorous training in a variety of different sports which included endurance training, wheelchair basketball, swimming, wheelchair racing, archery, therapeutic riding, wheelchair tennis, boccia and curling. The camp was organized by Ms. Tammalita Astwood, adaptive sports Coordinator at WindReach and was conducted by trainers and athletes from Canadian National Wheelchair Basketball Team.
The 2008 Beijing ParalympicsWindReach Founder, Alexander 'Sandy' Mitchell, represented Bermuda as a Para-Equestrian in the 2008 Beijing Paralympics. As a part of the effort by the Bermuda Paralympic Association and WindReach to provide greater opportunities for Bermuda’s para-athletes Paul Alves, Jessica Lewis and Sia Castle were able to travel to the Beijing Paralympics as observers. The three young Bermudian adaptive sports athletes were able to experience first-hand the thrills of international adaptive sports competition. |
